What Kept Us Busy Building Kitchen Essential Direct
Building Kitchen Essential Direct meant handling a wide product catalog, a seamless shopping experience, and a checkout flow customers would actually trust. The brief looked simple. The execution wasn't.
Organizing a Wide Product Catalog Without Overwhelming Shoppers
The Kitchen Essential Direct offers products ranging from cookware to bakeware, knives and utensils, storage, drinkware and specialty tools. To have that range in an intuitive, not chaotic browsing experience required some serious thinking from the outset.
A Checkout Flow That Earns Trust at Every Step
Consumers leave carts as soon as they don't feel right about it. We designed the checkout process to have no extraneous steps and provide transparent order summaries and secure payment, so customers can go from cart to confirmation without any hesitation.
Daily Deals and Promotions Without Breaking the UI
The client runs daily deals and seasonal discounts up to 70%. A promotions system that updates seamlessly, displays properly in most browsers and devices, and doesn't lead customers to believe they are being ripped off needed a bit more careful design than the simple discount module.
Performance Across a Large and Growing Product Library
A store with this many SKUs can slow down fast if the foundation isn't right. We built the site to load quickly and browse smoothly regardless of catalog size, with product pages that stay fast as inventory grows over time.

Kitchen Essential Direct by the Numbers
3.2Second Page Load
With products from eight different categories being carried, the site loaded in an average of 3.2 seconds on launch, ensuring low bounce rates and fast, responsive browsing experiences from the first click.
68%Reached Products in Two Clicks
The catalog design was successful. More than two thirds of visitors to the site click through from the home page to a product page within two clicks or fewer, which is the expected routing and structure of these pages.
94%Checkout Completion
Almost 19 out of 20 customers who got to the cart page actually made a sale. An easy payment process, trust signals, and a streamlined order summary all helped to control cart abandonment from the start and held it well below the ecommerce average.
ZeroDowntime at Launch
There were no reported outages during the first major sale. The promotions infrastructure handled the traffic flow, updated prices in real-time, and ensured a steady shopping experience during the campaign.
The Stack That Runs Kitchen Essential Direct
Every technology behind Kitchen Essential Direct was chosen for a specific reason. Catalog performance, secure transactions, and a promotions engine that updates in real time without touching the rest of the experience.

JetpackThe Work Behind Kitchen Essential Direct
Kitchen Essential Direct required more than good design and clean code. It required a clear process for building, with all moving parts on track. Here are the six stages that brought it from conception to launch.
Discovery & Requirement Gathering
Our first step was to map out the entire product catalog structure, customer journey and business needs without any design work. This involved clarifying shipping rules, promotional logic, payment options and category structure.
UI/UX Design
Wireframes were geared towards clearer browsing and greater checkout confidence. High fidelity screens have been created around a shopper who knows what they're looking for and requires it to be found quickly without slowing down their experience.
Development
Development of the front-end and back-end was done concurrently. The customer account system, shipping logic, payment integration, the product catalog and promotions engine were developed concurrently, with a weekly check-in with the client throughout the sprints.
Quality Assurance & Testing
All pages, filters, and checkout processes were tested on all devices and browsers before entering the live environment. The functions of the payment process and the application of a discount, product filtering and mobile responsiveness were validated in real-life conditions.
Deployment & Launch
We were able to deploy everything from configuring the domain, installing SSL certificates, setting up the payment gateway, to pre-launch performance testing. All of the features were activated and the full product catalog was populated with the right product categories.
Post-Launch Support
The post launch period focused on bug fixes, performance tracking and some fine tuning as the real traffic to the site occurred. The Kitchen Essential Direct team would no longer have to deal with technical problems if they were preoccupied with marketing and customer acquisition.
